11 February 2025

When teachers and students from St. Joseph’s Institution International (SJI International) in Singapore embarked on their mission trip to the Philippines, they were eager to connect, learn, and immerse themselves in a new environment. Their journey led them to De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, a fellow Lasallian institution renowned for its innovative approach to education.

Upon arrival, the group was welcomed into the heart of Benilde’s creative community at the Design+Arts Campus. This modern facility is a haven for artistic minds, offering state-of-the-art studios and workshops tailored for various disciplines. The campus is home to the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (MCAD), the only space in Manila that approximates an international contemporary art museum, providing students with exposure to global art trends. The visitors were particularly impressed by the Learning Commons, a vibrant area designed to foster collaboration and knowledge-sharing among students. They also explored specialized spaces like the Fabrication Laboratory, where design students bring their concepts to life using advanced technology. The energy and passion within the campus were palpable, reflecting Benilde’s commitment to nurturing creativity and innovation.

The exploration continued at The Atrium@Benilde Campus, the College’s newest addition. This 10-story building, designed with inclusivity in mind, offers an open-air cafeteria on the topmost floor, providing a space for relaxation and community building. The campus also houses the Learning Resource Center on the sixth floor, dedicated to supporting the academic programs of various schools within the College. The visitors appreciated the building’s thoughtful design, which includes escalators every two floors to ease movement and reduce elevator congestion. The Atrium is also home to interdisciplinary learning spaces where students from different programs collaborate on projects that push the boundaries of their respective fields. Here, the visitors witnessed how Benilde fosters innovation through hands-on learning, ensuring students are prepared to tackle real-world challenges.

Beyond the impressive facilities, the true highlight of the visit was the interaction between SJI International and Benildean students and faculty. Both institutions share a commitment to Lasallian values, focusing on faith, service, and communion in Mission. These shared principles cultivated meaningful discussions about holistic education, leadership development, and the importance of community service. The diverse student bodies of both schools enriched these conversations, highlighting the value of multicultural perspectives in today’s globalized world.

This visit also highlighted Benilde’s dedication to welcoming international students through its Benilde Global program. Designed to offer a comprehensive educational experience, the program invites students from around the world to immerse themselves in the Philippines’ rich cultural heritage while pursuing academic excellence. Whether through full undergraduate programs or exchange opportunities, Benilde Global provides a platform for students to broaden their horizons and engage in a vibrant, inclusive community.

As their enriching visit drew to a close, the teachers and students from SJI International gathered for a delightful lunch at Hotel Benilde, a distinctive establishment operated by Benilde’s School of Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Management. Hotel Benilde serves as a dynamic training ground for students pursuing degrees in Culinary, Hospitality, and Tourism. Here, students gain invaluable real-world experience, managing various aspects of hotel operations, from front desk services to culinary management, all under the guidance of seasoned professionals. This hands-on approach ensures that graduates are well-prepared to excel in the global hospitality industry.

During their visit, both institutions also explored opportunities for future collaboration, including resource exchange on teaching pedagogy and learning environment assessment, as well as the possibility of conducting in-depth short study trips. These initiatives aim to strengthen the academic ties between the two institutions, further enriching the learning experiences of both Benildean and SJI International students.

The visit brought together two Lasallian Communities, both devoted to holistic education, cultural diversity, and nurturing future leaders, for some truly meaningful exchanges. For international students seeking an enriching academic journey, Benilde offers a unique blend of innovative education and practical experience.
